Allen has over 30 years of financial management and operational experience in public accounting, with Coopers & Lybrand, and as a CFO for businesses ranging from closely held start-ups to venture backed organizations, Government Sponsored Enterprises and Tribal governments. Raised in Northern California, Allen has worked in a variety of industries including commercial banking, mortgage banking, physician practice management, HMO, legal, ecommerce retailing, consulting, real estate development, real estate services, property management, business services, construction, airlines, farm/ranch/wine/olive oil, mining/building materials, internet B2C, trucking/distribution, Tribal Government, Tribal Economic Development, gaming, and telecommunications.
Allen considers himself a business man first, an accounting professional second, and has been Chief Financial Officer, Executive Vice President of Finance and Operation, CEO of Economic/Diversification, Chief Operating Officer and Director of Business Development for various organizations, including public and private companies, taking one company public, and Tribal Nations. Allen's experience across a broad variety of industries provides him the foundation to quickly analyze all aspects of the business to identify areas of concern or for improvement and opportunities on which the company can capitalize. His knowledge of finance, systems and operations allows him to develop the financial and information systems and internal controls to support the company's operations. He possesses high-level skills in strategic business planning, establishment of operational/financial controls, transaction negotiating/structuring, systems integration and conversion, treasury functions, debt and equity funding, human resources, and risk management.
Allen has years of expertise in creating financial forecasts that have been used to raise capital and support business plans. He has raised equity for several companies, including $18 million to recapitalize an HMO with two IPAs and an MSO, operating and acquisition financing several companies, and a $265 million bond offering to finance a casino. Allen has developed and managed merger and acquisition strategies, managed or cleaned up numerous acquisitions and overseen the assimilation of systems and processes related to those and prior acquisitions.
Allen also has experience in dealing with companies that have run into financial problems. Prior to joining B2B CFO®, he helped bring a mining/building materials company out of bankruptcy, restructured and helped create a new business plan to obtain an $18 million capital infusion for an HMO with two IPAs and an MSO, and restructured and improved inventory controls, cash management and reporting and dealt with SEC and Medicare fraud problems for a $160 million public pharmaceutical distribution company which allowed the company to eventually be sold.
Allen recently joined B2B CFO®. He initially began providing part time and interim CFO services for companies while with Coopers & Lybrand and later with his own companies, CardreM and Excalibur Leadership Solutions. He has helped underserved and troubled companies that needed an experienced and knowledgeable CFO but were not in a position to pay for one on a full time basis. During his career, Allen has been the full time CFO, CEO or COO for 6 companies and 2 tribal governments and their economic development entities, and, as a B2B CFO®, helped 15 companies to take control of their finances, increase profitability, raise capital, reduce overhead and free up cash for the owners to reap the rewards of their hard work.
Allen is a hands on manager and enjoys solving his clients problems. He works well with employees at all levels within an organization and fosters loyalty and top performance from staff members. He is respected for his superb business skills, insight, objectivity, honesty and integrity.
Allen holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration with emphasis in Accounting and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley. He is active in his community and has held the position of President of the Ojai branch of the American Heart Association, Treasurer and then President of the Board of the Ojai Festival and member of the Department of Energy's Indian Country Energy and Infrastructure Working Group. Allen and his wife have lived in Ventura County for 24 years.
